Determination is everything.

I did it! I completed my half marathon yesterday in the pretty respectable time of 2:03:29. Which is far far better than I could ever have hoped for! And on top of that I absolutely loved running, the atmosphere was incredible and I had the biggest grin the whole way round. It really is true that the crowd cheering really lifts you and keeps you going, and until mile 12 it didn't really feel like hard work at all. A definite pinch myself moment, was running over London Bridge in the glorious autumn sunshine with Big Ben just starting to chime. The whole course was so inspiringly beautiful and a joy to run, I highly recommend this race to anyone thinking about trying out a half marathon. It was flat the whole way round, seriously beautiful and had a great atmosphere!



My knee did give up on me fairly early on in the run and it is now protesting a lot, especially when going down stairs, but I decided to just run through it and use my Jedi mind powers. The runners for Oxfam had the best slogan on their t-shirts which I decided to adopt as my mantra while running, "Determination is everything". I really think this is what got me round without having to stop and walk once and with such a big smile on face. I pretty much repeated this to myself the whole way round when my knee got bad until it passed again. Well done Oxfam! Although big credit has to go to my cheerleading team who were amazing! I think I had the best banners out of everyone there, serious effort and creativity went into those! You guys are superstars! More about them later though...

Another person also shouted out through the crowds "run through the pain, it's only temporary". This really resonated with me too, I thought about the people I was running for and the pains they must be going through in their lives and it gave me the strength to keep running for them. Even though I hurt now, I know it is temporary and the money I have raised will help some other people to realise that pain is temporary and isn't something they always have to live with. Someone will be there to help them through and that is partly because of the fundraising the whole MIND team did yesterday. I am very proud to have been part of such a great team and all the mind staff were brilliant and really looked after the runners. We got free massages afterwards and food and goody bags. It was a really nice little touch.
























Back to my support team then, my mum and brother Scott came down to cheer me on. My mum and sister had made the world's biggest banner for me! They were in Hyde park waiting for me and apparently I went so fast they didn't have time to get the banner out for me the second time I passed them! Ed was running around the course trying to catch me at various points along the way which was so lovely, he kept it low key with a MIND t-shirt which he wrote on "Yeah, Nicci!", you've got to love a guy who writes a gramatically correct slogan about you on his t-shirt!

And the dream team cheerleaders Freya and Lucy had a "crafternoon" and came up with the most inventive and gorgeous sign for me and were also running about round the course to cheer me on. I actually nearly cried the first time I spotted them as Dolly Parton 9 to 5 had just come on my playlist the second before I saw them, and we all went to see Dolly last year. The timing was just too perfect and the sign completely blew me away! I couldn't have done it without them so thank you so much all of you! And also thank you so much to everyone who sponsored me!!

Now I'm figuring out what to do next, I'm thinking some sort of adventure run involving mud, obstacles and cargo nets...

The long awaited Barcelona post!



I've been promising to write this post for quite some time now and have somehow never found the time. But last night I made myself do some photo editing in preparation and so here is a little round up of my short stay in Barcelona.

We arrived early evening on Sunday and quickly dropped off our bags at my sister and Miguel's place and then headed straight off to the beach, the weather was so hot it was the only thing to do. After a long swim in the sea we played a lot of beach bat and ball and then went to a beach bar for our first beer of the holiday. Bliss. In the evening we headed out onto the streets to check out the street decorating party. Every year in Barcelona all the streets in the different areas of the city are decorated by the residents and then get judged, after the judging it's just a big week long party. Every street is themed so each has a different vibe and live bands or shows depending on the vibe of that street. It's amazing to see the effort people put into this and so much of the material used to decorate is recycled or salvaged which is great.

The next day it was 2 years to the day since Ed and I became a couple so we decided to have a relaxing day at the beach and having delicious paella and just generally relaxing and feeling like we were on holiday. Bliss.

On day 3 we felt like we should step it up a bit and get in some sightseeing after all that lazing on the beach so we decided to use the Bicing bikes (just like Borris bikes) to make sure we could cover as much ground as possible. We had a lovely ride down to the marina and right along the coast then headed back up to the Parc Cituadella, this is one of my favourite spots in Barcelona, it has the most beautiful fountains and the trees are filled with bright green parakeets. So amazing. Best part though was we decided to rent a rowing boat, which was so much fun. Ed has never rowed before so we got into a few scrapes but he did pretty good once he got the hang of it. We spent most of the time trying to sneak up on the terapins that live in the lake, they were so cute and kept popping their heads up all over the place. I managed to snap one while he was sunbathing on the rocks but we got a bit too close and he swam away sharpish.

Next that day we decided to have a trip up to Montjuic on the cable car as this was something I had never done before. It was really a bit pricey for us, but the views were so amazing it was worth it. We had a wander around at the top had a coffee then headed back down to city via placa espana. We were lucky enough to get there just as the sun was setting and it was so beautiful, there was a man playing Spanish guitar and loads of people sat out talking and just generally lovely.

 We were supposed to be cooking for Vicki and Miguel that evening but we arrived home so late after the sunset that we only managed to get something on the table by about 9:30, late even by Spannish standards!! We were meant to be going to watch a friend of Miguel's play a gig on one of the decorated street, so we wolfed down the food and headed out again. It was the last night of the street decorating party so everyone was in full on party mood! There were some little kids spraying people on the street with their garden hose from the rooftoop and everyone was going crazy for them! Luckily the band were running late so we managed to catch all of their set, it was a totally dreamy accoustic set with lovely boy/girl harmonies under a canopy of stars, unfortunately the photos from that are on my camera which is currently a little bit dead. I will try to update with them at some point though.

 Our final day was just a short one as we had to catch our flight at 6pm so we decided to head up to Parc Guell as it is just a short walk from my sister's appartment and it's a great way to get to see some of Gaudi's work for free and without the queues. We had a lovely walk round and especially enjoyed standing in the sprinklers to cool off, it was scorchio! I always love Parc Guell whatever the season and it's even better for being free. Afterwards we had a picnic lunch then headed off to the airport.

 Even though it was only a short break I feel like it was so reviving and really helped kick those late summer blues after the terrible weather we had this summer in the UK. I visit Barcelona most years as my sister lives there, but I always find something new and exciting and always love going back there, I don't think I'll ever get bored of it.
 
So there you go, FINALLY an update about my holiday. I have so little time and so many posts at the moment I want to put up but I will keep trying to catch you up on my adventures and activities. Watch this space.

Sorry for the absence! 10 days to go...

So as you may have noticed I have been a little absent over the last few weeks and haven't been doing a very good job of keeping up with my blog posts. Sorry for this! Life well and truly got in the way of my good intentions. I have been travelling a lot and feel like I haven't even been in one place long enought to gather my thoughts and write a blog. But today life is starting feel like it's back to it's normal pace so I thought I'd fill you in on some of my adventures.

I was in Stockholm with work the week before last, which was lovely! I managed to get a run in while I was there and was feeling super excited and fit at that point. The weekend after Stockholm I went to Germany with my band, specifically Leipzig and Cologne. The journey over was pretty killer, and huge thanks need to go out to Paul for driving us the majority of the way there without rest! Superhero.

When we got to Leipzig I took what I knew would be the only oportunity I would get, to go out and have a run. I was feeling pretty ropey after 16 hours in a van and only minimal sleep but I knew it would do me good. Luckily next to our accomodation there was a lovely park with a forest trail along the railway tracks which made for an ideal running route, very easy to find my way back! I managed around 6km in 40mins although couldn't really track my run as couldn't use internet, too pricey! My trainers do have Nike+ built in but I haven't calibrated it so it's a little hit and miss with distances!! Anyway here are some snaps from my adventure...





I've been having physio for the last couple of weeks for my knees, which aren't terrible, but are really begining to hate me for upping my distances on runs. For that reason I've really held back on training the last couple of weeks to try and avoid any longer term damage and to make sure I'm able to run next weekend. So for the first time since Germany I went for a run last night. I decided that as I only had time for a short run I would attempt a 5km. I naturally set off at quite a pace which I expected to have to drop half way round but I felt so good I managed to keep it up for the whole 5km course, and set a new PB of 26:79, which is way under my previous best. I was pretty happy with that considering I've not been able to do much training lately.

Even though, I am concerned that I've lost some endurance strength so this weekend I'm going to fit in a long run while I'm back up north for my mum's birthday. I'm hoping for a nice clear day running along the sea front at morcambe but knowing the Lakes it will undoubtedly be tipping it down! I'm off to the gym tonight on a free pass, I'm testing out a few different places as when it starts getting properly wintery my ability to run outside is seriously diminished, so I'm hoping this one is nice and not too pricey. Fingers crossed!

Stockholm

I am currently in Stockholm for a conference with work and I am absolutely in love with Stockholm. It's a gorgeous city and I always love being beside the sea and just wish I could have more time to look around here as the conference is pretty full on. I'm definitely going to have to come back.

I got out for a run this morning though at 6:20am, a usually unheard of hour for me. But it was so worth it, the light was stunning and running along the harbour with all the boats was so refreshing and uplifting.

This is just a sneak preview and I'll update you properly once I'm reunited with my laptop. But I saw a bit of the Stockholm half marathon while on a tea break today. All the runners were amazing and it was so inspiring to watch and cheer them on. I'm now super excited for the 7th October and can't wait to take on the challenge!

My week in running- 27 days to go!


My trusty trainers and I haven't always gotten along well. At first they gave me the most awful blisters on the arches of my feet, and I hardly used them for about 2 years. These are actually pretty old trainers but it's only since starting training for this run that I've given them a chance and have actually worn them in. We're getting on pretty well at the moment but still have our off days, I think it's too late to change them before the run now though so we're in it together for the long haul. My i-Phone arm band is about the second best bit of running kit I have bought, and it was pretty cheap too I think. I love being able to run with my favourite songs on and the Runkeeper app is brilliant! I got this magazine for free the other day and it's been pretty interesting reading. Although mostly I just feel inferior to the super woman who ran 120km in one day, that is just insane.

Anyway, this week got off to a pretty shaky start while I was recovering from the after effects of freefit. I know that it is good for me in the long run but oh does it hurt for the first few days after. Anyway my first outing went pretty terribly! I managed just under 20 minutes and really couldn't keep going any longer. Pretty pathetic. I decided my body was telling me to just rest a little so I took the next day off. By Thursday I was feeling much more energetic so even though it is the busiest day of the week for me at work, I committed to having a go at running home for the first time.

Friday was just too nice an evening to go out running, so me and Ed headed to the park to play some beach bat and ball. We've been trying to get a rally over 30 for ages now and haven't really come close, but on Friday we managed a glorious rally of 38. There was celebratory ice cream. After this we went to me some friends for pie at Battersea Pie Station in Covent Garden, which was frankly delicious and pretty good value too. I have to admit though that there were a few drinks involved here, and that I have fallen off the waggon. Sorry!

To make up for my indiscretion though I pulled myself out of bed on Saturday morning and got out and went running. This run felt like turn around for me, I almost did 10km but was running out of time as I had a train to catch afterwards and hadn't packed so decided to go home. However, I felt like I could have kept running for quite some time still, which is honestly the first time that has happened! Fingers crossed this keeps happening and that maybe I will be able to complete my half.

The rest of my Saturday was spent up in Leicester visiting my friends, spending more than I should have in Primark, eating Mexican food and playing with Woody the wonder dog, best dog ever! Then back to London on Sunday for a cheeky little picnic with Ed, then band practise and home to watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, classic! Weekend well spent I think.

A little bit about me

I can't believe it's Sunday night already, this week and weekend has just flown by! I've been incredibly busy, which probably has a lot to do with it. September seems set to be a hectic month, but that's ok with me. Also can't believe it's now less than a month until D-day, makes me feel a little unwell thinking about it! More about the training later though.

So I thought today I would tell you all a bit more about my band, one of the other things I get up to when not running. I've alluded to the band a few times on this blog, but never really introduced it properly as I figured it was probably just my mum reading it over a cuppa. Anyway, We're called I Am In Love, which can take some explaining to people.Yes there have been misunderstandings...




We've been playing together in various guises now for around 3 years and have been all over the place doing gigs. We've visited Germany, Switzerland and Austria as well as most of the UK. There are four of us in the band, Sebby who does vox, Martin who plays geetar and does all the technical wizardry, Ed is our drummer and I play Keys.

People always ask me how I find being the only girl in the band, and honestly, I quite like it! Yes they pick on me a little, and yes the tour bus does smell pretty awful at times, and the conversations about football tend to grate, but they're all such great guys and we have so much fun together that it balances out. And we've seen and done some amazing things together.

We're all over t'interweb and you can see loads of videos, pictures etc if you google I Am In Love Music. Remember to add the Music on the end or you'll get a load of suspect results.Our new single is called Palm and you can have a little listen here if you are so inclined.

My week in runs- 33 days to go

The last week was a tough one for me in terms of running, after an overly indulgent week off it has been a real uphill struggle to get my fitness back. At the moment I’m finding it hard to tell if I’m injured, or if I’m just experiencing the awakening of muscles which haven’t been used in far too long.  Either way, every single part of me is aching and just standing up from the sofa is agony. They do say no pain no gain though, so let’s hope this is worth it! I’ve decided on a new format for keeping you updated on my running training, I’m trying out weekly updates instead of the usual blow by blow updates. I’ve also added a new page which takes you to Runkeeper where you can review all my running activities and maps etc since my very first steps. 



Sunday was my first venture out into running again and it went horribly! I’ve already posted about this won’t go on about it again! I followed this up on Monday with a longer run at 8.7km, my knee decided to have a little melt down and I had to give up earlier than I had hoped so I’ve been gently nursing it back to strength this week.

Tuesday I managed 6.36km and Thursday I hit a new PB for 5km while doing my speed training. I managed 5km in 28 minutes which is the first time I’ve managed to get under 30 minutes for this distance. I was pretty pleased with myself but did feel like I was going to either pass out or vomit. I ran another 1.24km as a cool down while trying not to be sick.
On Saturday it was back down to FreeFit on the park for some more gruelling strengthening exercises. I did actual press ups for the first time in many many years, not even the cheating girl press ups, proper ones! I did 20 press ups (not all in one go) as well who knows how many squats, lunges, planks, crunches and other forms of torture in the space of an hour, and I’m in the beginners group! It’s great fun though and the people are so friendly, but the next day is always agony. Every single bit of me aches now.
Sunday was supposed to be my long run, 10 miles I was scheduled for, but on account of my inability to move my legs I let myself off with just doing a slow jog round the park. That in itself was hard enough. I’m going to try and fit in the 10 mile run after work this week, not sure when though. But I thought it’s always better to listen to your body than push yourself too far and end up with a serious injury. 

 
Which brings us to today.  Today I have mostly been hobbling around the office feeling a little sorry for myself. I managed to cycle into work no problem though which was a relief! Somehow cycling is one of the few things that doesn’t seem to hurt me at the moment! Maybe I should cycle around the office...Anyway I've decided tonight my body needs a rest so I'm gonna put on Monty Python and eat a whole lot of nachos and fajitas and kick back. Then back on it tomorrow...even if I have to roll myself out the door.

Summer Sundae 2012

The first part of my holiday involved a quick stop off at Summer Sundae festival in Leicester for the weekend. My wonderful lovely friend Rav was involved in organising the festival and the Leicester fringe festival and managed to get the band on to a guest list which was amazing. I've been to this festival now for about the last 4 years so it was great to be able to go this year even though I'm no longer living in Leicester.

The best thing about being in Leicester is being able to catch up with so many of my favourite people in one place. This weekend was no exception, there was plenty of sun, fun, fabulous people and of course drinks. Perhaps a little too much of the latter which is what has prompted my new found abstinence now until after race day. Oh dear, one day I will learn moderation but until then I suppose I'm an all or nothing girl. 

Here is a montage of awesomeness from the festival which I made using pic monkey. Obviously a big highlight was seeing Adam Ant, we all got face paint done in his honour and we looked excellent I think.

Long overdue- 41 days to go

Normal service has been resumed. I am back from all of my gallivanting and will be trying to catch you up with my adventures over the next few days and also keeping you up to date with my training efforts, or lack of really...

Yesterday I took my first tentative steps back into the world of running after what can only be described as an extremely indulgent week off. And I can tell you it was seriously hard work! I'd completely let myself get out of the running mind set so even getting out the door was traumatic enough.


I started off a bit too fast and as it was quite early in the day still I hadn't had breakfast and I think this really showed by the end when I was pretty much walking around. I gave up once I'd done 5km even though I was nowhere near home yet, I walked the rest of the way back looking completely beaten.

However I am glad I got back out there and in a way glad it went badly as it's given me a bit of a kick. I've decided that from now until I complete the run that alcohol has to be completely off the cards. After a week of over indulging in that arena I can definitely feel a difference, especially in my lungs. So you heard it here first, I am on the waggon. I'm planning a bit of a diet overhaul as well to get myself in the best shape I can manage with the time I have left. But you will have to wait for news of that as Ed is making me bacon and eggs and it's bank holiday Monday so really that seems only fair...

Quick catch up- 45 days to go



It's been an absolutely crazy few days for me, but so much fun. I've been jetsetting and festival-ing and generally having an amazing time, which does mean that my running training has suffered somewhat! I went to Summer Sundae festival at the weekend and saw the legendary Adam Ant- amazing! Then flew to Barcelona with Ed to celebrate our 2 year anniversary and to visit my sister and her boyfriend as well. As you can see from the photo the weather was ridiculously amazing and we had such a good time!

I'm going to try and do seperate posts about all my adventures as soon as I get time but I just wanted to check in for the meantime. I'm off to Cardiff for work this afternoon so I'm going to attempt to blog on my phone while on the train which may go horribly wrong we'll see.

So goodbye for now but I'll be back with a proper post very soon.

Double Whammy- 53 days to go



Ed gave me these beautiful sunflowers on Monday, I've been trying unsuccessfully to grow some on the windowsill but they just look a little weedy and sickly. These really do put mine to shame! I read about a study on the emotional impact of flowers recently though, apparently the participants in the study were significantly less depressed, and less anxious after receiving flowers. They also noticed a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction. I'm hoping some of that will rub off me from these flowers as I'm currently finding this week a bit of a slog. It's crazy as we're off on a little holiday next week, but the week before a break is always hard right?

Anyway Monday was rest day and on the agenda for Tuesday was an "easy" 40 minutes run, at least that's what my training plan said. I was happily not too achy from Sundays efforts and set off feeling pretty good. I decided to follow the same route as Sunday. I kept it steady but there are a few really tough hill sections in the route which I decided to try and power up as quickly as I could, I was so tired at the top of each hill but it felt good! We'd been swimming after work on Tuesday and I'd cycled to work and back (Which is a lot more like hard work on Evelyn!) so I really was feeling it by the end of the run and so cut it short by 2 minutes. I'm sure the cycling and swimming will compensate though! Here's the map...

Today I was really low on motivation, especially as the training plan cheerfully announced it's intention of having me run 50 minutes tempo. Not a plan I relished I have to say, especially after a long day and sticky toffee pudding at lunch! I decided to head to Clissold park hoping that the change of scenery would get me through. It was a lovely evening and there were so many people out running. One thing that really does help me keep going is trying to overtake other people, usually unsuccesfully, or just trying to keep up with the person in front of me. I find it so much easier than motivating myself to keep a pace. This probably wasn't much of a tempo run but it was the best I could manage. Here's the map...


It's hard to tell, but I did three laps of the park. The old me would have managed one then given up. I don't think I'm necessarily much fitter yet, but there has definitely been a shift in my mind set. The fear has set in, and I don't want to let down all the people who have so generously sponsored me. I'm finding that thought alone really helps get me round the final lap of a run when I feel like just giving up and going home.

Weekend round up- 56 days to go

It's been another busy, but thoroughly enjoyable weekend for me. It always feels like the weekend flies by far too quickly though.

Friday's plans to go for another run didn't pan out, but I did take me new bike for a spin around the park which was fun followed by band practise then drinks in the Faltering Fullback, one of my favourite pubs in our area which has an amazing labyrinth of a beer garden.

On Saturday I headed up to Leicestershire with the band to play at Strawberry Fields Festival. This was our first gig of the summer as we've been having a bit of time off to write, so we were all a bit nervous. It went well though for the most, a few minor technical hitches but nothing major.. It was so nice to catch up with some of our friends from Leicester as well who we don't see nearly enough of any more. Thanks so much to everyone who came to watch us!


In the evening back in London it was off out to Borough High Street to wave goodbye to one of my best friends from school. She's off to New Zealand for a year or so and I am so incredibly proud and jealous! It was a lovely night and having so many of my friends in one place was just so much fun. I rocked a sequined parrot t-shirt which I found in one of the vintage shops at Strawberry field. LOVE it!


And I suppose now it's time to get down to the real purpose of this blog, Running. So today I dusted off the trainers and dragged myself out of the house as soon as it looked like it had cooled down a little. Today has been scorching! According to my training plan today's goal was 7 miles, which works out at around 11.2km. I decided to run with a bit more of a structured route plan today than usual, to help me get through the distance so I followed the route used for the 5km free park runs which take place every week in Finsbury park. Here's my map so you can see how I got on....



I did it! It took me a long time but I got there. It feels like I've got through a bit of a psychological barrier now as well, 10km always seems like quite a landmark distance. Although I've only gone a little bit further than that, it has given me some more confidence. I really found that having a route planned out before helped me keep going as I could visual how far I had left. I'll definitely be trying this more often. My knees and blisters have both held out ok as well, but I suppose only tomorrow will tell for sure!

At least I had this to come home to thanks to the lovely and talented chef Mr Edmund Grunill.

Oh yeah! I tried to make mine a bit healthier by adding salad and only having a quarter (!), but Ed managed to eat a whole half! It was really quite impressive. I'm going to sit and watch the Olympics closing ceremony now and wish I was there. If only I had a spare thousand pounds or so...

Let me introduce to you...

Evelyn Martha May! Haha yes I did give my bike a rather long and elaborate name. But she just looks like a bike that deserves a fancy name.

I have admit though, after having cycled a new bike with lots of gears and everything working it's taking some getting used to having a vintage bike again. But it's just got so adorable and was a lot cheaper than a new bike.

Anyway just a quick check in. We're on our way to play Strawberry Fields festival this afternoon, first gig in ages so excited but a little nervous. At least the weather is beautiful for us.

Bad things really do happen in threes- 58 days to go

The day started out ok really, morning coffee, bowl of Weetabix minis while watching Scooby Doo, the usual stuff. But I really should have never left the house yesterday...

My first taste of disaster was when, after at least 2 hours of being at work already, I realised my dress was on back to front. Small fry really though compared to the next horrible occurrence. I started to feel a bit peckish so went to get my packed lunch out of my bag and, duh duh duhhhhhhh, I'd forgotten it. Anyone who knows me will understand how much this upset me, I love food a bit too much. But all of this pales in comparison to the next bad thing that happened to me. I'd had a bit of a  premonition about this in the morning as well; while locking up my bike I almost left the keys in the lock but just realised in time. It had me a bit uneasy all day though and I even checked my bike at lunch time, no problems. But sadly at the end of the day when I went out to fetch my bike to cycle to the pool, it was gone. The lock was cut clean in half and lying on the floor, a hollow reminder of what used to be.




RIP you lovely lovely bike

It makes me so sad that some horrible person has now got my lovely bike and I have to get the tube to work instead. I hate the tube! I'm not used to it anymore and it stresses me out so much and gets my day off to a terrible start. I'm hoping to get a new bike tonight, a cheap-o second hand one this time that looks to rubbish to steal (I hope). Stupidly I didn't get my last bike insured as it was on my to do list, but I never got round to it. Let that be a lesson to me.

I am wearing my bicycle necklace today as an homage to my stolen friend. Dramatic, me? I know someone who once wore one white glove to school for a week to mourn the break up of her relationship. I think I'm ok....




I'm going to post again later tonight about my latest fitness attempts so make sure to check back later. And also if you have a bike, buy four padlocks at least.
